Selenium – an essential trace mineral
Selenium is an essential trace mineral that supports overall health, thanks to its role as an antioxidant and protection against oxidative stress.
It is naturally found in soil, water and foods of plant and animal origin, and as a component of enzymes, especially glutathione reductase (the most important antioxidant enzyme in the human body), it supports the cellular health of the entire body.
It works synergistically with other antioxidants, such as with iodine, zinc and vitamin E, so together they contribute even more to the defense of cells against oxidative stress and to building a healthy immune, cardiovascular, neurological and hormonal system.
In high concentrations, it is mostly found in the thyroid gland and testicles.
It participates in the metabolism of thyroid hormones, in the biosynthesis of testosterone, and in the development and motility of spermatozoa.
Symptoms of selenium deficiency:
- autoimmune thyroid diseases
- nodules in the thyroid gland
- difficulties with conception in men and women
- impaired spermatogenesis and sperm motility
- muscle weakness
- reduced heart muscle function
- frequent inflammations and infections
- loss of hair and fur
- chronic fatigue
- osteoarthritis
- memory difficulties
Although many of these signs can be associated with other problems (including zinc deficiency), they are also associated with low selenium levels.
Smoking, alcohol, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and birth control pills prevent selenium absorption.
Diagnosing its deficiency is done through a blood test, a hair or nail sample, or a test for the level of glutathione peroxidase (or other selenoproteins) that require selenium to function.
Foods rich in selenium:
Brazil nuts are the greatest dietary source of natural selenium. One fruit contains between 70 and 90 mcg of selenium, which is approximately one daily dose for an adult, so caution is advised due to possible overdose.
Other healthy sources of selenium are: mushrooms, oats, beans, lentils, garlic, mustard and sunflower seeds, wild salmon, tuna, sardines, beef, poultry, cottage cheese and eggs.
